    Google
"Google uses a complicated mathematical analysis, calculated on more than a billion hyperlinks on the web, to return high-quality search results so you don't have to sift through junk. This analysis allows Google to estimate the quality, or importance, of every web page it returns.
Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query, so Google uses sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search."

[Webpage http://www.rene.belso.dk/ Not Available/Under Construction Apr '04. All you ever wanted to know about Search Engines and how to use them--and maybe a bit more!] "This web-page is, in part, a guide to search engines. Search engines, are computer programmes that, given search criteria's, search databases (indexes) for web pages, ranks them and presents them in a uniform list. They can basically be divided into four categories: (Normal) search engines; Subject directories; Meta search engines; Meta-meta Search Engines and All-in-one search utilities. Often, a given search engine is in fact a "hybrid" of these categories. However, it is important to understand how search engines work and how they differ, to be able to find what you are looking for.
Search Egines (Normal): These include AltaVista, Google, Infoseek and thousands more. They all supply you with web-pages ("hits") in responses to your query based in four factors: Index size, index quality, query language and index ranking.
    Directories (or catalogues)
[like Yahoo] are just like search engines except they put each web-page into a category (science, sport hobbies etc.). This can be useful if your are just looking for what exits within a specific subject field. You may e.g. first look for " hobbies", then "pets", "fish" and finally "pariah" - thus finding all pages (that are indexed in that directory) about pariah fish. Finally, you may search within this directory for "Cuba" or "Cuban" pariah fish. Though very few people search for information by, say, starting at "A" in an encyclopedia, and then reading until they find what they are looking for, it is useful to be able to "see what there is" in some (not too big) sub-category.
    Meta Search Engines:
[like Mamma] A meta search engine is an engine that searches several normal search engines (like AltaVista, Google, Infoseek, etc.) and then compiles there results in some (often dubious) way into one holistic result. The meta search engines have the very big advantage of covering almost all web-pages, as opposed to normal search engines, which only cover the pages that are index at there own site. Meta search engines have the disadvantage of not being able to offer advanced query languages and filter techniques, since these can not be translated into something understandable to all the queried underlying engines at the same time. However, some meta search engines do attempt this by translating the query into each search engines own syntax.
    All-in-one & Meta-meta Search Engines:
[like CleverSearch] Unlike meta search engines, all-in-one search pages do not send your query to many search engines at the same time. Instead, they generally list a wide-variety of search engines and pages. In my opinion they are only good as a list of search engines - somewhat like this page !"

We well remember the visitor who complained about the unpleasant glare from the HTML default royal blue links. That lead us to entirely revamp our background and link colors, making them softer, more eye pleasing. And the Florida expert who warned us about frustrating visitors with blind links. We followed his advice and now carefully identify links so visitors know before they "click" exactly where they're clicking to. Your comments or suggestions will be equally appreciated.
